Origin: Formed within English, by conversion; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: English Open Sesame.
Etymology: < Open Sesame, magical formula (see quot. 17222 at sense A.) < open v. + sesame n., after French Sesame, ouvre-toi, the magic words by which, in the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, the door of the robbers' cave was made to fly open (a1715 in A. Galland: see note).The story of Ali Baba was written in French by A. Galland before 1715 (as Le cabinet des fées), apparently drawing on an oral Arabic source.
