Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin molendinum , -aceous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin molendinum mill (see molendinarious adj.) + -aceous suffix. R. G. Mayne gives a Latin form molendinaceus (see quot. 1857). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (molendinēi·ʃəs) /məʊlɛndɪˈneɪʃəs/.
Botany. Obsolete.
Of a seed or fruit: resembling a windmill in having winglike projections.

1927–9 H. Wheeler Waverley Children's Dict. V. 2810/1 From the seeds or small fruit of certain plants a number of wings project, somewhat like the sails of a windmill. By this means molendinaceous or mill-shaped fruits are scattered by the wind.
