Etymology: Cognate with Old Frisian -mītha (in formītha to avoid), Middle Dutch mīden to avoid (Dutch mijden to avoid, shun, neglect), Old Saxon mīðan (Middle Low German mīden ), Old High German mīdan to avoid, shy away from, conceal (Middle High German mīden , German meiden to avoid) < the Germanic base of mis- prefix1.In Old English a strong verb of Class I, though distinctively strong inflections are apparently not attested in Middle English. The prefixed form bemīðan to hide, conceal, lie hid, is also attested in Old English (compare be- prefix).
Obsolete.
