Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Mirabilis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mirabilis, genus name ( Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 177, after earlier use by him in Systema Naturæ (1735)) < classical Latin mīrābilis (see mirabilis n.1). Compare French mirabilis (1814).
Botany.
Any plant of the genus Mirabilis (family Nyctaginaceae), mainly native to warmer parts of America, having flowers enclosed in a calyx-like involucre of persistent bracts; esp. marvel of Peru, M. jalapa (see marvel n.1 4). Also (in form Mirabilis): the genus itself.
