Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mitrailleur.
Etymology: < French mitrailleur person who fires mitraille (1795; 1873 in sense ‘soldier who serves a mitrailleuse’; in later use also as the second element in compounds denoting firearms, as fusil-mitrailleur light machine gun (1915 or earlier), pistolet-mitrailleur submachine gun) < mitrailler (see mitraille v.) + -eur -eur suffix. Compare Dutch mitrailleur rapid-fire automatic weapon (1883; also in sense 3).French mitrailleur is apparently not attested in sense 2; compare slightly earlier mitrailleuse n., the usual word in this sense in French. The form mitraillette ( < French mitraillette submachine gun (1937)) is occasionally attested:1980 W. M. Spackman Presence with Secrets ii. 54 By the time I saw it was mitraillettes not shotguns in their hands they'd surrounded the car and it was too late. N.E.D. (1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (mitrayȫr) /mitrɑjœr/.
