1968 Listener 3 Oct. 436/1 A generation of excellent artist-designers, such as Bruno Paul, Hans Poelzig and the brothers Taut, all worked in the spirit which was already associated with the word Sachlichkeit, which—taken literally—means ‘thingness’; it is usually translated as ‘matter-of-fact’, ‘realistic’, ‘sober’, ‘objective’, and gained currency in matters of art and design early in this century.
