Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: aero- comb. form, -phore comb. form.
Etymology: < aero- comb. form + -phore comb. form; in sense 2 probably after French aérophore (1866 in this sense; earlier as adjective in sense ‘which carries air (in insects or plants)’ (1798)).
1. Botany. In certain ferns: a specialized structure with numerous stomata for aeration, usually seen as a band of pale tissue on the stem or a small outgrowth at the base of a frond.
