Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Militinus, Melitinus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Militinus (late 12th or early 13th cent.), variant of Melitinus of or belonging to Melitina (late 6th or early 7th cent.) < the name of Melitina (6th cent., classical Latin Melitēnē , Hellenistic Greek Μελιτηνή ), a city (modern Malatya) in east-central Turkey, ancient Cappadocia, where the legion was based from 70–71 a.d. + inus -ine suffix1.
Obsolete. rare.
The twelfth legion of the Roman army; = Thundering Legion n. at thundering adj. 1b.
