Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Gentoo n.1; Spanish juanito.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) a specific use of Gentoo n.1 (perhaps compare also slightly later Johnny n. 3b), or perhaps (ii) < Spanish juanito (although this is not securely attested denoting the penguin until considerably later: 1994 or earlier), specific use of the male forename Juanito Johnny < the male forename Juan John + -ito, suffix forming diminutives.
A large penguin native to Antarctica and the subantarctic islands, having a bright orange bill, prominent tail, and white stripe extending from eye to eye over the top of the head, Pygoscelis papua. More fully gentoo penguin.Also called Johnny.
