Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: mightily adv.
Etymology: Probably originally a variant of mightily adv., with early reduction or loss of the vowel of the second syllable (see below). In later use (especially in form might'ly) frequently representing a colloquial disyllabic pronunciation of mightily adv. With reduction of Old English -ig- (see -y suffix1) > -e- in unstressed position compare Old English hefelīce beside hefiglīce (see heavily adv.), grǣdelīce beside grǣdiglīce (see greedily adv.), and perhaps also cræftelīce (see craftly adv.) beside cræftiglīce (see craftily adv.). In later Middle English and Older Scots forms with medial -e- , the word is difficult to distinguish from mightily adv.; some of the examples given here could alternatively be analysed as showing that word.
Obsolete.
= mightily adv.
