Etymology: < classical Latin porphyrītēs a purple-coloured stone found in Egypt (Pliny), use as noun (short for porphyrītēs lapis porphyry stone) of porphyrītēs of or consisting of porphyry < Hellenistic Greek πορϕυρίτης (adjective; compare πορϕυρίτης λίθος porphyry stone) < πορϕύρα purple (see purpure n. and adj.) + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare French porphyrite (1791; 1562 in Middle French in an apparently isolated attestation), Italian porfirite (a1498). Compare earlier porphyry n.
