Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: milk n.1, vetch n.
Etymology: < milk n.1 + vetch n., probably in allusion to the belief that certain species increased the milk yield of grazing animals.
Any plant of the genera Astragalus and Oxytropis (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), characterized by pinnately divided leaves and axillary racemes of often purple or yellow flowers; an astragalus, an oxytropis; esp. (more fully sweet milk-vetch) a Eurasian plant of calcareous grassland and scrub, A. glycyphyllos, which has greenish-white flowers (also called wild liquorice). Often with distinguishing word.purple milk-vetch: see purple adj. 2c.
