Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon agiotan , Old High German argiozan (Middle High German ergiezen , German ergießen ), Gothic usgiutan < the Germanic base of or- prefix (compare a- prefix1) + the Germanic base of yet v.In sense 2 perhaps partly also representing a form of Old English ofgēotan to soak, steep, to douse ( < of- prefix + yet v.), with reduction of the prefix (compare a- prefix4). In Old English a strong verb of Class II. In the rare Mercian past participle form ageten (one isolated attestation) perhaps after verbs of Class V.
