Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Mersatores , -ial suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Mersatores, order name (W. MacGillivray Hist. Brit. Birds (1852) V. 421; < classical Latin mers- , past participial stem of mergere (see merge v.) + -ātores , plural of -ātor -ator suffix) + -ial suffix.Compare also:1842 W. MacGillivray Man. Brit. Ornithol. II. 226 [Certain sea-birds] never enter into the water, unless momentarily by plunging or dipping into it from on wing. Of this latter kind are the numerous species..to which collectively I have given the name of Mersatrices. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mə̄ɹsătōə·riăl) /mɜːsəˈtɔərɪəl/.
Ornithology. Obsolete. rare.
In W. Macgillivray's terminology: of or belonging to the order Mersatores, a grouping of seabirds (including gulls, shearwaters, and their allies) characterized by their habit of finding food on or near the surface of water without diving deeply.
