Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French accessit; Latin accessit.
Etymology: < French accessit (1690 in sense 2, a1696 in sense 1) and its etymon classical Latin accessit, 3rd singular perfect of accēdere accede v.In sense 1 the Latin noun most commonly used appears to be classical Latin accēssus access n., used in post-classical Latin in this sense (1417 or earlier).
1. Roman Catholic Church. A supplementary round of voting in a papal election, held immediately after a ballot has failed to elect a candidate with a two-thirds majority. Now historical.Accessit votes are added to the votes cast for each candidate in the original ballot. If the accessit then fails to elect a Pope, the votes are burnt and an entirely new ballot takes place. Voting by accessit was prohibited by the Cardinal Dean in the election of Pius X in 1903, and subsequently removed from Canon Law.
