merlonn.

Brit. /ˈməːlən/, U.S. /ˈmərl(ə)n/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French merlon.
Etymology: < French merlon part of parapet between two embrasures (1642) < Italian merlone raised section of a battlement (1561) < merlo in same sense (13th cent.; < post-classical Latin merulus (10th cent. in Italian sources), merlus (1159), perhaps < classical Latin merulus (see merle n.1)) + -one -oon suffix. Compare Italian mergolo, glossed by Florio (1598) as ‘a pinnacle or battlement’. Compare also Spanish merlón, Portuguese merlão (18th cent.).The image suggested in the derivation of post-classical Latin merulus merlon < classical Latin merulus blackbird is of a row of birds sitting on a wall.
