Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin prothysteron; Greek πρωθύστερον.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prothysteron (5th cent. in grammarians) or its etymon Greek πρωθύστερον, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Euripides Phoenissae 887, use as noun of neuter ofπρωθύστερος last first, in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Euripides Orestes 702 < ancient Greek πρωτο- proto- comb. form + ὕστερος later (see hystero- comb. form1). Compare earlier hysteron proteron n.
