Gaudichaud-Beaupré (1789–1854): each of three units into which a leaf, or a phyton (see phyton n.), was regarded as divisible.Distinguished as radicular, cauline, and foliar. ΚΠ 1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. §639 Each of the individuals forming a compound plant is called by Gaudichaud a phyton.., and in it he recognizes three parts or merithalli. 1951 R. C. McLean & W. R.
