Etymology: < meta- prefix + encephalon n., perhaps after German Nachhirn afterbrain (1845 or earlier in sense 2).
Anatomy and Zoology.
1. The posterior division of the hindbrain, giving rise to the medulla oblongata, fourth ventricle, and auditory nerve; = myelencephalon n. 2. Obsolete.
