Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: meta- prefix, Greek ἐνσάρκωσις.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + Byzantine Greek ἐνσάρκωσις ( < ancient Greek ἐν in (see en- prefix1) + σαρκ- , σάρξ flesh (see sarco- comb. form) + -ωσις -osis suffix), after metensomatosis n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metensāɹkōu·sis) /mɛtɛnsɑːˈkəʊsɪs/.
Obsolete. rare.
The replacement of the flesh of a dead body with that of a living one.

1875 A. W. Ward Hist. Eng. Dramatic Lit. II. 589 Almeria's offer to clothe the rotten bones of her (supposedly) dead lover with her own flesh—a species of metensarcosis altogether original.
