In later use directly < post-biblical Hebrew mĕzūzāh. Compare French mezuzoth (1722 in the source translated in quot. 1732, the plural form apparently used as a singular).Although the custom of attaching the mezuzah to the doorpost can be traced back to the commandment ‘Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates’ (Deuteronomy 6:9), some modern scholars see its ultimate origin in a more ancient practice of having a sign on the doorpost as a prophylactic to ward off evil.
