Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palla.
Etymology: < classical Latin palla rectangular mantle, worn especially as an outdoor garment by women, in post-classical Latin also shroud (Vetus Latina), rich cloth (5th cent.), altar cloth, frontal, chalice cover, corporal (6th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources), archbishop's pall (from 8th cent. in British sources), of unknown origin (compare pallium n.).
1. Roman History. A loose outer garment or wrap worn out of doors, usually by a woman; an outer robe, a mantle.

1706 Phillips's New World of Words (new ed.) Palla,..a sort of large upper Garment, us'd both by Men and Women: In our old Records, it signifies a Canopy, such as is born over the Queen at her Coronation.

1885 W. E. Addis & T. Arnold Catholic Dict. (ed. 3) Palla, a small cloth of linen used to cover the chalice and usually stiffened with cardboard, &c. The upper part may be covered with silk.
