Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin metaphrastes.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin metaphrastes (1607 in the passage translated in quot. 1610) < Byzantine Greek μεταϕράστης (in name of St Simeon Metaphrastes (fl. c960); in medieval Greek in sense ‘translator’) < Hellenistic Greek μεταϕράζειν (see metaphrasis n.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns. Compare French métaphraste (17th cent.).Compare occasional use of the unassimilated form metaphrastes in English contexts:1950 Antiquity 24 52 They reveal Nicander as a metaphrastes.
Now rare (chiefly archaic or historical).
A person who paraphrases a literary work or puts a composition into a different literary form, e.g. by turning prose into verse, or one metre into another. Also: a translator, esp. one who makes a literal, word-for-word translation.Originally with reference to St Simeon Metaphrastes (fl. c960), a Byzantine hagiographer who modernized the style and presentation of the lives which he collected and edited.
