Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French métamorphisme.
Etymology: < French métamorphisme (1823) < métamorph- (in métamorphose : see metamorphosis n.) + -isme -ism suffix. Compare Italian metamorfismo (late 19th cent.).
1. Geology. Change in the structural, mineralogical, or chemical characteristics of rocks; (later) spec. that produced by chemical and physical forces operating at depth, such as pressure, heat, or volatile content; the processes resulting in such change. Also with distinguishing word.contact, dynamic, regional metamorphism: see the first element.
