Etymology: < meso- comb. form + -lect comb. form, after acrolect n. and basilect n.
Linguistics.
Originally: (in a post-creole linguistic community) a social dialect or variety of a language having features in common with both the standard language and the creole; esp. an intermediate form between the acrolect and the basilect. Later also: (more widely) an intermediate variety in any speech continuum.
