Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French suivante.
Etymology: < French suivante (1634 in this sense), feminine form corresponding to suivant servant, follower (end of the 14th cent. in Middle French as sievant ), use as noun of the present participle of suivre to follow (see sue v.). N.E.D. (1915) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (süivāṅt) /sɥivɑʲ̃t/.
Now historical.
A lady's maid; esp. one trusted by her mistress as a confidante or close companion. Frequently in French contexts.
