Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew sukkāh.
Etymology: < Hebrew sukkāh booth in which the people lived at the feast of the harvest (Leviticus 23:42), specific use of sukkāh booth, temporary shelter < sāḵaḵ to screen, to cover (compare quot. 1680, which gives an etymologizing gloss). Compare earlier Sukkot n.In the β. forms after the Hebrew plural form sukkōṯ. O.E.D. Suppl. (1986) also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (suka·) /suˈka/.
Judaism.
A temporary booth or hut erected for the celebration of Sukkot (Sukkot n.), in which Jews observing the festival eat, spend time, and (in some cases) sleep.Such booths are typically topped with natural materials such as tree branches and decorated with items associated with autumn or the harvest, and must be placed out of doors. The booths are considered to represent the shelters used by the Israelites during their forty-year period spent wandering in the wilderness.
