Etymology: < Anglo-Norman menuise, menuesce, menuiz, menuse gudgeon, small matter, small quantity, and Middle French menuise (singular) small fish (c1196 in Old French; French menuise ) and their etymon post-classical Latin minusia, menusa, menusia small fry (from a1150 in British sources) < the post-classical Latin sense ‘small quantity’ (4th cent.) of classical Latin minūtia smallness (see minutia n.). Compare minnow n., which in plural use is frequently indistinguishable from this word.
Obsolete.
With plural agreement. Small or young fish. Occasionally also in singular (with unchanged form).In some later quots. a specific type of small fish (e.g. the gudgeon) may be intended.
