Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French méningitis.
Etymology: < French méningitis ( F. Herpin Méningitis, ou inflammation des membranes de l'encéphale (1803)) < méninge (see meninx n.) + -itis -itis suffix. Compare French †méningité (1793), méningite (1829).The plural form is after plurals in -ides of Latin and Greek nouns in -is (compare -id suffix2).
Pathology.
Inflammation of the meninges, usually resulting from bacterial, viral, or other type of infection; an instance of this. Frequently with distinguishing word indicating the cause or site of inflammation.
