Etymology: < spring n.1 + point n.1In astronomical use (see sense 1) probably after post-classical Latin punctum vernale (1520 or earlier); compare French point vernal (early 19th cent. or earlier) and German Frühlingspunkt (late 18th cent. or earlier).
