Etymology: < the plural of man n.1 + folk n. Sense 2 is perhaps after Old Icelandic mannfólk humankind (compare manfolk n.). Compare also womenfolk n.
1. In singular (with plural agreement) and (now esp. North American) plural. colloquial and regional (now chiefly North American). Men in general; the men of a family, household, etc., esp. as distinguished from the women.
