单词 rotogravure
释义

rotogravuren.

Brit. /ˌrəʊtə(ʊ)ɡrəˈvjʊə/, U.S. /ˌroʊdəɡrəˈvjʊ(ə)r/
Forms: 1900s– rotagravure, 1900s– rotogravur (rare), 1900s– rotogravure.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: roto- comb. form, gravure n.2
Etymology: < roto- comb. form + gravure n.2, probably after the name of the Rotogravur Deutsche Tiefdruck GmbH (Berlin), said to be < the names of the two companies out of which it was formed in 1911: Rotophot GmbH (Berlin) and Deutsche Photogravur AG (Siegburg). The form rotagravure (compare quot. 1919 at sense 1) reflects a reinterpretation of the first element of the word as showing classical Latin rota wheel, roller (see rota n.). A process of printing etchings from rotating cylinders was developed by the Austrian-Czech artist and printer K. Klič in Lancaster in the 1890s (originally for printing textiles), but he did not patent his invention, and apparently did not use the word. A related process (invented by E. Mertens) was later popularized by the German company discussed above, but Klič is still frequently credited with the invention.
Printing.
1. A method of rotary printing in which one cylinder (the plate cylinder) carries an etched image which is inked so that the image is transferred to another cylinder (the impression cylinder) that does the printing. Frequently attributive.Rotogravure is typically used for long print runs. It was formerly used for printing sections of a newspaper carrying photographs when the body of the paper was printed by other means (cf. sense 2). The process is now used for printing large-circulation newspapers, magazines, catalogues, and packaging.
