Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian rotonda, rotondo; French rotonde.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Italian rotonda circular building (16th cent.; 1547 as ritonda with reference to the Pantheon in Rome, after Santa Maria Rotonda , the name of a church occupying the building of the Pantheon (14th cent. or earlier; compare the Latin name cited at rotunda n.)), kind of cape for women (18th cent., probably after French: see below), use as noun of feminine of rotondo round ( < classical Latin rotundus rotund adj.), and partly (ii) < French rotonde circular building, especially the Pantheon in Rome (1491 in Middle French in the name of Saincte-Marie la Rotonde , apparently after either Italian or Latin (now Sainte-Marie de la Rotonde ); 1690 in more general use), kind of cape for women (1606), semicircular area at either end of a train carriage (1872) < classical Latin rotundus rotund adj.With sense 1 compare earlier rotunda n. 1a. With sense 3 compare earlier (in slightly different sense) rotundo n. 3 and also quot. 1827 at rotunda n. 1c.
