单词 metropolite
释义

metropoliten.adj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin metropolita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin metropolita, noun (4th cent.) < Byzantine Greek μητροπολίτης (4th cent.; already in Hellenistic Greek denoting the citizen of a metropolis) < ancient Greek μητρόπολις metropolis n. + -ίτης -ite suffix1. Compare Middle French metropoliti metropolitan bishop (1525, in form apparently reflecting pronunciation of the medieval Greek word), French métropolite (1679), Russian mitropolit (11th cent.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mĭtrǫ·pŏləit) /mɪˈtrɒpəlaɪt/.
