单词 mendinant
释义

mendinantn.adj.

Forms: Middle English mendenaunt, Middle English mendinant, Middle English mendinaunt, Middle English mendynan, Middle English mendynant, Middle English mendynante, Middle English mendynaunt, Middle English mendynnante, Middle English meyndenaunt, 1600s mendynaun.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French mendinant, mendienner.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman or Middle French mendinant, present participle (compare -ant suffix1) of Middle French mendienner to beg < mendien (adjective) mendicant (a1428), altered form (with substitution of suffix; compare -ian suffix) of mendiant (see mendiant n. and adj.). However, the manuscript evidence for the supposed etymon is ambiguous, and Anglo-Norman Dict. s.v. mendivant takes the relevant forms as showing -u- not -n- : compare mendivaunt n. and note at that entry. The English examples could arise from misreading of Anglo-Norman and Middle French mendivant mendivaunt n. (unless the Middle English examples are themselves interpreted as showing -u- or as copied from archetypes with -u-).
Obsolete.
