Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μέσον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μέσον (see meson n.2), with insertion of -i- after mesial adj. Compare mesio- comb. form and later meson n.2 N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as mī·siǫ̆n, me·siǫ̆n /ˈmiːzɪən/ /ˈmɛsɪən/.
Anatomy. Obsolete. rare.

1803 J. Barclay New Anat. Nomencl. 121 Suppose a plane, to pass along the middle of the neck, the mediastinum, and linea alba, and to dividing [sic] the neck and the trunk into similar halves..and let this plane be denominated Mesion.
1881 Science 19 Mar. 124/2 Dr. Barclay proposed mesion, and mesial has been generally used.
