Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin dichotomos , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin dichotomos, dichotomus halved (4th cent.), (in botany) dividing into two equal branches (1696 in Ray, or earlier; < ancient Greek διχότομος cut in half, equally divided, especially with reference to a half moon < διχο- dicho- comb. form + -τομος : see -tome comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare dichotomized adj.
