Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek δίχρους , δίχρως , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < either ancient Greek δίχρους (uncontracted δίχροος: see dichroous adj.) or δίχρως two-coloured ( < δι- di- comb. form + χρώς colour < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + -ic suffix, perhaps after dichroite n. Compare French dichroïque (1833 or earlier), German dichroisch (1838 or earlier). Compare earlier dichromatic adj. 1 and dichroitic adj. Compare also earlier dichroism n.
Science.
Having or exhibiting dichroism (dichroism n.). Also: (of a mirror, filter, etc.) passing or transmitting only light in a certain band of wavelengths.Dichroic filters typically have a special coating to produce the effect, rather than being coloured in the conventional way. dichroic fog n. Photography fog (fog n.2 4) which appears greenish or reddish according to whether it is viewed by reflected or transmitted light respectively.
