Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Medina , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Medina (Arabic Madīna , use as proper name of madīna medina n.; originally Madīnat al-Nabī City of the Prophet), the name of the city in present-day western Saudi Arabia (formerly Yathrib) to which Muhammad fled from Mecca in 622 a.d. + -an suffix.
