Etymology: < scientific Latin Megalop-, Megalops megalops n. + -ine suffix1, after scientific Latin Megalopinae.Both the scientific Latin and the English word were apparently coined by T. Gill, zoologist and consultant to Cent. Dict. (see quots.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·gălopəin) /ˈmɛɡələʊpaɪn/.
Zoology. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
