Etymology: < birth n.1 + wort n.1; so called with reference to the plant's supposed medicinal property of promoting childbirth (compare Aristolochia n.).
Botany.
Originally: any of several European plants of the genus Aristolochia having roots used to promote contraction of the uterus and for various other medicinal purposes; †the root of any of these plants (obsolete). In later use more generally: any plant of the genus Aristolochia. Frequently with distinguishing word.The genus Aristolochia comprises shrubs, lianas, and perennial herbaceous plants having strangely shaped flowers, some of which were thought to resemble the pregnant uterus. The species most commonly used medicinally were probably A. rotunda and A. clematitis.round birthwort: see the first element.
