Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: megalo- comb. form, -mania comb. form.
Etymology: < megalo- comb. form + -mania comb. form, after French mégalomanie ( H. Dagonet Traité élémentaire et pratique des malades mentales (1862) 7, as alternative to earlier monomanie monomania n.). Compare German Megalomanie (1863).
In Psychology: delusions of power or self-importance, esp. resulting from mental illness; a passion for grandiose schemes. More generally: lust for power, a desire to control.
