Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin megalographia.
Etymology: < classical Latin megalographia painting on a large scale or with large-scale figures (Vitruvius; in subsequent art criticism sometimes taken to refer to depictions of grand and elevated subjects) < ancient Greek μεγαλο- megalo- comb. form + -γραϕία -graphy comb. form. Compare French mégalographie (1547 in Middle French in a translation of Vitruvius; 1868 in Littré; 1952 in the passage translated in quot. 1959). Compare earlier micrography n.
