Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: meco- comb. form, -meter comb. form2.
Etymology: < meco- comb. form + -meter comb. form2, probably after French mécomètre (1630 in a book title denoting an instrument used in geometry for measuring lengths and visible distances; 1868 in Littré denoting the obstetric instrument, although compare quot. 1846). Compare earlier mecometry n. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mikǫ·mĭtəɹ) /miːˈkɒmɪtə(r)/.
Obsolete. rare.
An instrument for measuring length; spec. a graduated instrument for measuring the length of a fetus or newborn infant.
