Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: to meet the people.
Etymology: < phrase to meet the people ( < meet v. + the adj. + people n.), used especially with reference to a public visit by a prominent person.The phrase was popularized by the 1940 musical revue Meet the People by Sol Barzman and Louis Lantz (including a song of the same name), in which a Broadway star goes on tour and takes a job as a welder in a shipyard (compare quot. 1943 at meet v. 3a); a film version starring Lucille Ball was released in 1944.
