Etymology: < French maudit (past participle of maudire : see maldisant n.), forming noun phrases (as postmodifier) on the model of earlier poète maudit n.
Of creative artists or their work: shunned or repudiated by contemporary society, esp. as being outside the bounds of decency or good taste (usually with implication of subsequent critical re-evaluation and appreciation). Frequently postmodifying French and English nouns, in imitation of the usual French construction: see also poète maudit n.
