单词 cameroonian
释义

Cameroonianadj.n.

Brit. /ˌkaməˈruːnɪən/, U.S. /ˌkæməˈruniən/
Forms: 1800s– Cameroonian, 1900s– Camerounian.
Origin: From proper names, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Cameroon , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Cameroon, Cameroun (French Cameroun), the name of a country in western Africa + -ian suffix. Compare French camerounien (1911 or earlier). The name of the country ultimately derives < Portuguese Rio dos Camarões , literally ‘shrimp river’, the name said to have been given to the Wouri River by the explorer Fernão do Pó in the second half of the 15th cent. ( < rio river (see rio n.2) + dos of the + camarões , plural of camarão kind of shrimp, cognate with Spanish camarón camaron n.); the form of the place name was apparently with influenced by association with Spanish camarones, plural of camarón. The name of the river was applied to the surrounding land and eventually used in German to form the name of the colony of Kamerun (founded in 1884). For early uses of the river name in English contexts compare:1600 J. Pory Gen. Descr. Afr. 41 in tr. J. Leo Africanus Geogr. Hist. Afr.
