Origin: Either (i) a borrowing fron French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French cambriele; Latin camerella.
Etymology: Either < an unattested Anglo-Norman variant of Middle French (Walloon) cambriele (mid 13th cent. in Old French; < cambre chamber n. + -iele -elle suffix; compare Old French (Picardy) chambrele (first third of the 13th cent.), Middle French (Picardy) chambrelle (c1330), and also Old French or Middle French (northern) cambrel (14th cent.; probably < cambre chamber n. + -el -al suffix1; compare post-classical Latin cameralia (plural noun) lodgings (13th cent. in British sources)), or < post-classical Latin camerella (see quot. ?c1475; < classical Latin camera camera n. + -ella -ella suffix). Compare Italian camerella (14th cent.; second half of the 13th cent. as †camarela).
Obsolete. rare.
