Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ornithogalum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ornithogalum (1548 or earlier as ornithigalum ; 1557 or earlier as ornithogalum ); compare classical Latin ornīthogalē (Pliny)) < Hellenistic Greek ὀρνιθόγαλον < ancient Greek ὀρνιθο- ornitho- comb. form + γάλα milk (see galactic adj.). Compare Middle French ornitogalon (1553), ornithogalon (1555), French ornithogalum (1557). Compare ornithogal n.
Any plant of the genus Ornithogalum (family Liliaceae), comprising perennial herbs native to the Mediterranean region and southern Africa, with bulbous roots and (usually) racemes of greenish-white flowers; esp. O. umbellatum. Also (in form Ornithogalum): the genus itself. Also called star of Bethlehem (see star of Bethlehem n. 1), chinkerinchee.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 306.
