Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Palmerin.
Etymology: < the name of Palmerin de Oliva, hero of a series of popular 16th-cent. Spanish romances.Palmerin was the illegitimate son of a Byzantine princess; and his name ( < Spanish palmera palm tree (see palmer n.3) + -ín -ine suffix1) is said to have been derived from his exposure as an infant in a wicker basket among palms and olives on a mountain side.
Any of the knightly heroes of the 16th-cent. Spanish romances concerning Palmerin de Oliva. Also in extended use: a redoubtable knightly champion.
